I saw a woman standing alongside the road, near an entrance to another part of the world. I INSTANTLY sought this city in every dream, sucked into the craziness. This imagery is sourced from a low definition gaming system, but it is obvious that the man’s face is ripped away, and a pool of blood remains. I approach quickly to find that a dead body lies contorted on the road, its face smashed to the point of mutilation. Walking down the street, I spot red in the distance. The world was grey everywhere, except for what appeared to be a port, and roads that crossed the entirety of the area. My very first heart-sinking feeling came when I entered what appeared to be a city. Strange creatures and objects started to appear where there was once nothing, or perhaps something more predictable. The walls started becoming more and more like strange, colorful patterns. Strange, I thought, but nothing crazy.Īs I played more and more, the world unfolded into chaos before my eyes. If you come in contact with him, you will not be able to access an option in the game called “flashback,” wherein you can relive snippets of the previous dreams you have had. At any point in time, this man can appear walking straight toward you. He is a man walking in a grey trench coat and hat. The first creepy thing that I must mention is the Grey Man. I honestly wanted to have something happen to legitimize the story I read, despite how ridiculous it was. I’m not one to discard a game because of its age, so I had a tolerance for the lack of graphic detail and the annoying sound made when you walk. At first, things seemed fairly interesting, but normal. You can also be murdered in this game while in the Violent City, but more about that in a second. As with normals dreams, death results in an awakening via return to the menu, with an additional dream under your belt. In addition to awaiting for the dream to complete itself, you can die. If you find a pathway, you can simply walk within it and be taken to it’s intended outlet.

If you come into contact with a wall or an object within the game, your screen will flash and you will be taken to a different place in the world. Travel through these worlds comes in two forms: linking and paths. With time, however, the textures of the walls in all of the worlds become a bunch of different colors, designs, and sometimes images. At first, images might seem fairly normal. The dreams feed off of each other, such that the more you dream, the stranger your world becomes. Now, the game is very much up to your play. After a dream is completed, the screen fades away and you are taken to a screen the depicts whether your dream was Static or Dynamic as well as whether it was an Upper or Downer (they are the x and y axes, respectively). The dreams can last a variable amount of time, sometimes taking a few minutes, or perhaps up to around 10 minutes. The world has several different parts, some that are a little trickier to get to, some you will frequent if you play. Once you select the dream option, you are usually taken into a world where you control a character from a first-person perspective. I will refer to them as dreams from now on. It took a little time, and the game had a very limited release (one which never left Japan) but I did manage to find all the components I needed to play it.Įach game is called “a Day” in the game. **If you want to get to the more interesting part of this story, skip down to the denoted areaĪnyway, having found the story ridiculous, but the game fantastic, I decided to hunt this game down.
